College Race Recap - Florida State Cross Country Invitatonal 2014
Womens 5K The set up was great. The course is in fantastic condition, the crowd is at full throat and twenty-eight teams are toeing the line eager to let loose. Headlining the D1 field were home team FSU with UCF, USF, FAMU contending as well as non-D1 Tampa, Saint Leo and North Georgia. The gun went off right at 6:20 with temperature hovering around 89º.
The Blaney sisters, Anne-Marie & Catherine lead the charge coming through the first mile at around with Catherine’s teammate Kelli Williams right behind. FSU’s Carly Thomas and FAMU standouts Effiey Kosgei & and Judith Kibil made up the front pack. At the two the Anne-Marie was pulling away from Catherine with Thomas steps behind. That order stood to the finish line with Anne-Marie laying down a 17:23 for a 29 second win over Catherine with Thomas trailing 6 seconds before. Home team FSU gets the narrow one point D1 team win over UCF, 72 to 73 with USF in third. Tampa takes the Non-D1 team win over Saint Leo and North Georgia.
Men’s 8k The temps started to lower with the sun as the Men line up to start the 8k race, but it was still in the mid 80s when the gun sounded. FGCU grad and assistant coach Argeo Cruz lead the way through the first part of the race with Florida Southern’s Bobby Ormsby, Flagler’s Corey Mundy in tow. Cruz was out in front with a small cushion over Mundy at the 3 mile but in the last charge up the wall Mundy over took Cruz and raced in for the win. FSU won the D1 team trophy with Florida Southern taking the non-D1 team crown.
